ONational Advocacy Day 2009
On March 22-23, 2009, SNMA members from all over the country
will converge on Capitol Hill for the first SNMA National Advocacy
Day.  This event is being held in conjunction with the National
Medical Association's National Colloquium on African American
Health, to be held March 21-24th, 2009.
What is Advocacy Day?

Advocacy day is an opportunity for students to increase their
awareness of key legislative issues affecting medicine, to foster
relationships with legislators through political involvement, as
well as to gain education in the practical aspects of physician
advocacy. Advocacy Day activities include educational sessions
on effective advocacy and lobbying techniques, briefings on
pertinent legislative issues currently before Congress, and a full
afternoon on Capitol Hill meeting with legislators and their
staffs.
SNMA Advocacy Day 2009

The focus for this inaugural Advocacy Day will center around
three key issues:

  1. HIV/AIDS in Minority Populations
  2. Minority Health Disparities
  3. Medical Student Diversity

Individuals participating in Advocacy Day will attend seminars
on these topics, with a focus on existing legislation.  On
Monday, SNMA members will meet with legislators and staff
members and advocate for the needs and concerns of medical
students of color, as well as addressing the needs of
underserved communities.
