President Obama stands poised to tackle this issue in an effort
to create a more equitable system for all pledging, along with
Congress, to pass comprehensive healthcare reform legislation
by this fall. Founded on a vision of empowerment and advocacy,
the SNMA is rooted in a commitment to address inequities in
medical education, racial and ethnic disparities, and injustices in
U.S. domestic and foreign health policy. In this rich tradition, our
membership aims to ensure that our lawmakers not only
understand and consider the plights of the underserved, but
most importantly execute healthcare reform legislation that
addresses the needs our frequently overlooked communities.
A Country in Action
It is with this fervor for justice that we organize The March for
Health Equity. During September 4-7, 2009 in Selma and
Montgomery, Alabama, medical students, alongside our
community neighbors, will march to call attention to this all-
important element of the unfinished civil rights agenda. We
march to demand appropriate redress for the health inequalities
that persist. We march to speak to the inequities that we bear
daily witness to in our educational mission to serve. We march
because we as young future physicians have a powerful and
unified voice that echoes far and wide and on behalf of those
who go unheard. We invite you to come be a part of this
grassroots effort to bring people together to dialogue as to
ways we can improve our own health, and the health of our
families and communities. All are welcome – The March for
Health Equity is for the young and old alike, individuals &
families, churches, businesses, and schools.
How YOU can help!
During this momentous Labor Day Weekend, by way of the
generous sponsorship of many, food and beverage will be on
hand, as well as guest entertainment, giveaways, and so much
more! Please make plans to participate in The March for Health
Equity today! If you desire to support our effort to effect change
on behalf of the underserved, uninsured, and underinsured, we
invite and encourage your additional support by:
- Your Submission of a Project Insight photo, video, or other
visual media as we document the current state of health in
communities around the country.
- Your financial contributions to make the March for Health
Equity a reality (see Panel to the right). As we each bore
witness in the 2008 US Presidential Election, even the
smallest donation has the power engender Change.
We are encouraged that you have taken the time to learn about
The March for Health Equity. Thank you in advance for
your contribution, be it small or large. You have our assurances
that with your support, we the members of the Student National
Medical Association will be the voice of change on September 4-
7, 2009 as We March for Health Equity.
