OWelcome to SNMA Advocacy
                                  The Student National Medical Association
(SNMA) is the nation's oldest and largest
student organization focused on the needs
and concerns of medical students of color.
Membership includes more than 7,000 medical
                                   students, pre-medical students, residents and
physicians. Established in 1964 by medical
students from Howard University and Meharry
medical schools, the SNMA boasts over 40
years of service to underserved communities
                                   and medical students.

SNMA is honored to be one of the founding members of the Alliance of
Black Student Professionals, a partnership between several national
organizations whose goal is "to speak with one voice on issues that
universally impact the Black student professional population and to
advocate for societal change toward the benefit of its communities."

Through efforts coordinated by the Health Policy and Legislative Affairs
Committee, SNMA conducts advocacy efforts to address legislative
issues that affect medical education, health care delivery, and the
health status of underserved communities. Past focus areas include
funding for pre-medical recruitment and preparation programs, violence
prevention, obesity, universal health care, and affirmative action.
Recently, SNMA has participated in wide-spread voter registration and
election protection through its local chapters, and continues to look for
other grassroots efforts to assure the appropriate representation of its
members and the inclusion of its mission and vision in the national
political discussion.

In 2009, health policy has become a central concern throughout the
American public.  As one of the pivotal issues in a historic presidential
election, individuals across the nation are weighing in with their
thoughts on the future of American health care.  As the next cadre of
minority physicians, the SNMA has placed membership education,
political advocacy, and voter empowerment among its primary goals.
With these objectives in mind, we eagerly welcome you to our new
advocacy web page.
